Wakefield Historical Society
Soap and the Social Staircase: The Simpson Family’s Victorian Country House Life, Walton Hall, Monday 18 July
Today’s event was immensely successful. The event included talk, exploration of documents, question and answer and a walk to an historical site (the grave of the naturalist and explorer, Charles Waterton. Mystery of the Missing Priory
Nostell Priory events on Saturday went very well with c.70 attending. Mystery of the Missing Priory sold out! Lecture lunch at Nunnington today sold out. So far, so good.
Dig at Duffield Castle, Derbyshire – new event announced
A new National Trust event has been announced – a team of archaeologists will be undertaking a dig at Duffield Castle, Derbyshire.
Please feel free to come down any weekday to talk to the archaeological team. They will also be running site tours twice a day, every weekday at noon and 3pm. On Saturday 8th August there will be an Open Day, from 11–4 when you can come and meet the whole team, see some medieval artefacts and hear about what they’ve discovered. Leicestershire Archaeological and Historical Society
Guided Walk around Burrough Hillfort
Alan McWhirr, Honorary Secretary of the Leicestershire Archaeological and Historical Society conducted a tour around Burrough Iron Age hill fort on Monday 20 July. It was a great success and attracted 107 people!

Leicestershire and Rutland Archaeology Week
This county-wide event, coordinated by County Archaeologist Pete Liddle, has got off to a good start with 107 people attending one guided walk (see above) and around 50 taking part in a tour of Newhouse Grange Medieval Barn. Local publicity has worked well with two features in the Leicester Mercury and several bits on Radio Leicester and good bits in town papers as well.
