Exciting new discovery at Redgrave Church

There has been an exciting new discovery at Redgrave Church, Suffolk, and visitors to the church’s event during the Festival of British Archaeology will get a privileged view of what exactly it is!

Tunnel coffinsA floor tile slipped during a recent rehearsal for Quasimodo musical at Redgrave Church and this has now revealed an underground passage. Malcolm Weale of Geofizz Ltd had recently done a geophysical map which showed what appeared to be vaults in that area. There had been hearsay stories of tiles slipping in the 1950’s and that there was a vault somewhere which had been last opened in the 1920’s.

It is probable that the vault at the end of the passage dates from between 1550 and 1650 and the passage itself from 1700 to 1850.

Visitors on SAturday 17 and Sunday 18 July will be able to see a range of sophisticated geophysical equipment in use and a live video camera projection from the underground passage, which will hopefully reveal more!
